Mapping Your Success: The Business Model Canvas Workshop

Charlotte, NC – A great idea needs a great blueprint. That’s exactly what The Boost Pad cohort members explored on Saturday, September 20, 2025, during an intensive Business Model Canvas (BMC) workshop. Hosted at UNC Charlotte Co-Lab and led by Boost Pad Entrepreneur in Residence and Angel Investor Harold Hughes, the session focused on transforming raw ideas into structured, sustainable business models.

Why Every Founder Needs the BMC

The workshop reinforced three essential rules for building a successful business:

  1. Solve a real problem.

  2. Deliver value that generates revenue.

  3. Innovate and sustain that value over time.

The Business Model Canvas puts these rules into action. By mapping out all nine elements of a business—from Value Proposition to Revenue Streams—on a single page, the BMC ensures clarity, alignment, and intentionality. For early-stage founders, this framework is critical to moving from concept to execution with focus and confidence.

The Power of a Client Persona

One of the workshop’s core objectives was developing a Client Persona. Founders dug deep into identifying their ideal customers, learning how to back up their problem-solution narratives with real evidence.

A strong client persona helps startups:

  • Clearly define who they serve.

  • Tailor messaging, services, and features to customer needs.

  • Avoid wasting resources on broad, unfocused strategies.

The result? Stronger customer connections and a clearer path to sustainable growth.

Key takeaway: The BMC is never “done.” Treat it as a living document that evolves with your business. (And yes—always use sticky notes instead of writing directly on it!)

Action Items for the Cohort

To put insights into practice, participants left the workshop with three next steps:

  • Reflection: Identify one key insight gained about their business model.

  • Pitch Refinement: Record a new, sharper 60-second elevator pitch.

  • Pitch Deck Building: Draft stronger Solution and Business Model slides.

Looking ahead, the cohort will dive into Entrepreneurial Mental Health & Mindfulness with Tameka Brewington of Realtalk Counseling in Module 6.

Key Takeaway

This wasn’t just an academic exercise. The Business Model Canvas workshop gave founders the chance to test ideas, gather feedback, and refine the foundations of their ventures in real time. By balancing structure with creativity, the BMC remains a cornerstone tool for turning bold visions into sustainable businesses.
