Founder Spotlight: Natasha Pender Craig

Founder & CEO, CLT Wrapper’s Delight | Boost Pad Cohort 11

Sometimes the best business ideas start with a simple observation.

In February 2020 , Natasha Pender Craig launched CLT Wrapper’s Delight after a conversation with a family member who was frustrated by the lack of professional gift wrapping services in the area.

What began as an idea for a seasonal business quickly evolved into a year-round service.

Today, CLT Wrapper’s Delight partners with corporations across the Charlotte area that use gifting as part of their customer experience and relationship-building strategies.

Natasha’s journey also reflects a challenge many founders experience — balancing the demands of daily operations while still making time to grow the business.

“The biggest challenge has probably been time management from the perspective of working in the business versus working on the business,” Natasha shared. “As a solopreneur I prioritize my clients’ needs first, and with whatever time is left I work on the business.”

Her advice for fellow entrepreneurs is simple but powerful:

“Capture as much customer and prospect data as possible and maintain it in one place — even if you don’t yet have a CRM. Stay in regular contact with customers and nurture those relationships over time. It’s easier to keep a client than it is to go out and gain a new one.”

Natasha’s story is a reminder that great businesses often begin by noticing everyday problems and deciding to solve them.

2025 was a year that asked us to stretch, steady ourselves, and step forward with more intention than ever. And as we look back, one thing becomes clear: this community knows how to rise together.

Despite shifts in the funding landscape and the evolving needs of early-stage founders, The Boost Pad grew stronger. We refined our programs, expanded our team, tightened our mission, and positioned ourselves at the heart of Charlotte’s movement toward inclusive economic mobility.

We Graduated 30 Founders Across Two Powerful Cohorts

This year, we successfully launched and completed two Cohorts — each one filled with founders who brought grit, creativity, and real determination to the table.

Together, they:

We Strengthened Our Curriculum and Launched a New LMS

Growth required reinvention — and we embraced it.

In 2025, we refined and elevated our former 16-week program into a strengthened curriculum rooted in founder feedback, market shifts, and best practices. The updated program includes clearer learning pathways, better tools, and more hands-on support.

We also launched a new Learning Management System , giving founders:

Long-term access to resources
A digital home for continuous learning

This upgrade wasn’t just operational — it was a commitment to making entrepreneurship more structured, more accessible, and more practical for emerging founders.

Our Leadership Grew — and Our Team Did Too

From Curriculum to Crowning: Reliving The Boost Pad's Electrifying Cohort 11 Pitch Night!

Charlotte, NC – The air was buzzing with anticipation as The Boost Pad culminated months of hard work, mentorship, and entrepreneurial growth at its Cohort 11 Pitch Night on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, hosted by the Do Greater Foundation. This wasn't just an event; it was a celebration of innovation, resilience, and the immense power of community in fostering the next generation of business leaders.

The Journey of Dedication

The road to the Pitch Night stage (Week 14) was a rigorous, structured journey. The progress and dedication shown by our founders throughout the program were significant and did not go unnoticed . The momentum culminated in Week 13's intensive online Pitch Preparation Session , where every founder delivered their deck and received specialized, constructive feedback from our leadership team.

This session was designed not just to prepare the top five for the upcoming live contest, but to strategically equip all Cohort 11 participants—including the finalists and the rest of the cohort—for future high-stakes opportunities , such as introducing their companies to investors, securing grants, and forming key partnerships .

This valuable session also served as the platform for the Best Pitch Deck Award deliberation—a $500 recognition created to honor outstanding strategic presentation across the entire cohort. Leading up to the live event, our social media channels built excitement by celebrating the "unlocking" of each of the five finalists.

The Grand Finale Unfolds

The energy was palpable as the evening began. Our MC, Charles Kearse , set a high bar, immediately leading into a powerful moment of entrepreneurial inspiration. Christopher Dennis of Fix Housing Solutions kicked off the speaking segment, sharing critical insights on how founders must build housing solutions from the ground up, starting with a strong foundational vision.

Then came the moment everyone awaited: The Pitch Contest! Our five finalists— Marcus Wade, Meka Walker, Chris Valada, Cassandra Taylor, and Junior Bernard —took the stage, delivering dynamic 5-minute presentations on their visions.

Following the pitches, the founders faced a rigorous Q&A round from our distinguished Judges Panel : Christopher Dennis (Fix Housing Solutions), Lakesha Womack (ASPIRE Community Capital), and Sherry Robinson (Pinnacle Economic Empowerment Center). While the judges deliberated, Julius Edwards from the City of Charlotte delivered an inspiring special address, focusing on how strong leadership within an individual entrepreneur is the foundation for broader community and economic impact.

The True Triumph: Graduation and Awards

The excitement of the competition was matched only by the solemn pride of the graduation ceremony . The journey through Cohort 11 was demanding, requiring immense dedication from every founder.

We are profoundly proud of this cohort. The road to graduation was not easy, but they :

Successfully completed all courses, and
Maintained very high levels of active class participation throughout the program.

That’s exactly what The Boost Pad cohort members explored on Saturday, September 20, 2025, during an intensive Business Model Canvas (BMC) workshop. Hosted at UNC Charlotte Co-Lab and led by Boost Pad Entrepreneur in Residence and Angel Investor Harold Hughes , the session focused on transforming raw ideas into structured, sustainable business models.

Why Every Founder Needs the BMC

The workshop reinforced three essential rules for building a successful business:

Solve a real problem.
Deliver value that generates revenue.
Innovate and sustain that value over time.

The Business Model Canvas puts these rules into action. Last week, we gathered in a room full of dreamers, builders, and visionaries to launch Cohort 11 of The Boost Pad . It was more than just a kickoff—it was the beginning of a journey that will shape businesses, communities, and lives.

From the very first moments, the energy in the room full of leaders was undeniable. We opened the evening by asking each participant to share their one word why. One word to capture the heart behind their decision to step into this cohort. Words like freedom, stability, legacy, and impact filled the space, and in that moment, it became clear: every person in the room was carrying more than a business idea. They were carrying a vision for a better future—for themselves, their families, and their communities.

That’s what The Boost Pad is all about. Our mission is to equip emerging and under-resourced entrepreneurs with the strategic guidance and support needed to develop innovative solutions, build sustainable enterprises, and advance economic mobility through the Charlotte region and beyond. Our vision is bigger than business—it’s about creating lasting impact, raising up leaders, and fueling change that ripples far outside the walls where we meet.

Learning to Show Up

Joan guided the cohort into a powerful reflection: What does success look like for you in one year? Not in abstract terms, but in the real numbers, rhythms, and outcomes that build a sustainable future. It was an honest reminder that success isn’t just about profit margins—it’s about creating lives that align with purpose.

Finding Your Voice

Rachel then challenged participants to distill their dreams into a single minute. The elevator pitch—a story of vision, clarity, and courage—proved to be both harder and more rewarding than it sounds. Some pitches stumbled, some soared, but all became stepping stones toward confidence. As one participant bravely stood and shared their pitch with the group, you could feel the room lean in. Their story mattered. Every story mattered.

Building Like a Boss

Charles brought the teaching for the evening, equipping participants with the words, mindset, and financial literacy to begin thinking—and speaking—like entrepreneurs. He reminded everyone that leadership is not about titles, but about courage, stewardship, and the willingness to take ownership of a vision.

Looking Ahead

Finally, Steven closed the night by grounding the cohort in practical steps forward. Each participant set a SMART goal for the week—a small, intentional action to move closer to their dream. Because transformation never happens all at once. It comes one decision, one step, one act of courage at a time.

And so, Cohort 11 has begun. Over the next several weeks, these entrepreneurs will grow, stretch, and prepare for Pitch Night—the moment when their vision takes center stage. But more than a presentation, Pitch Night is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the belief that when one person rises, entire communities rise with them.

Fireside Wisdom: From Hustle to High Impact

This year’s pitch night was elevated by two deeply inspiring fireside conversations, moderated by our Entrepreneur-in-Residence and MC, Pastor Charles Kearse , whose leadership has been foundational to the journey of so many founders in our network.

First, we heard from Dominique Boone , founder of Leslie’s Laundry Care. Dominique walked us through her story of launching a concierge laundry service that would go on to land a contract with the PGA Championship. Her candid reflections on resilience, vision, and growth lit a fire in the room.

We also had the honor of welcoming guest speaker Julius Edwards , a respected organizational development leader, strategic advisor, and founder of Legacy Empowerment Group. On a lively evening at the Freedom Business Collective in Charlotte, NC, The Boost Pad teamed up with Aspire Community Capital and Freedom Business Collective to host the Access to Capital 101 event — an energizing, knowledge-packed experience designed to equip local entrepreneurs with the insights and tools they need to navigate funding pathways and unlock growth for their businesses.

From 6:00–8:00 PM , the room buzzed with energy as local founders, early-stage startups, and seasoned business owners gathered, eager to gain a deeper understanding of how to access both debt and equity capital.

Originally slated for a nearby venue, the event found its perfect home at Freedom Business Collective, 1525 Enderly Drive — just a short walk away, offering an even better setup and atmosphere for connection and learning.

Shonda’s journey began on the vibrant island of St. Thomas, USVI. Her plant-based lifestyle started in childhood, driven by curiosity and compassion, and nurtured by the culinary artistry of her family. These roots became the foundation of her mission: to create delicious Plant Based vegan dishes that honor Caribbean heritage while promoting health and wellness.

Cohort Spotlight: Jubileague Academy – Calvin Robertson

For Calvin Robertson, the inspiration to start a business was deeply rooted in his love for his family. “My children were my inspiration,” Calvin shares. “I wanted to leave them an inheritance—not just financially, but something meaningful they could carry forward for generations.” While his professional expertise lay in enterprise software development, Calvin envisioned a venture that would be fun and engaging not only for himself but also for his children and grandchildren. His answer: video games.

Calvin’s journey began with volunteering to teach coding through game design, often bringing his kids along to share in the experience. During these sessions, he noticed a transformative effect on the students—they discovered a passion and career path they hadn’t previously considered. “So many young people didn’t even know game design was an option,” Calvin recalls. This realization led to the creation of Jubileague Academy, an innovative program designed to inspire and empower the next generation of game creators.

The cornerstone of Jubileague Academy is the Playmaker program, which equips middle school, high school, and college students with the skills to design, develop, and market their own games. By blending STEM education with storytelling, creativity, and collaboration, the program fosters critical thinking and teamwork while preparing students for diverse career paths. “Games are more than entertainment,” Calvin explains. “They’re a gateway to skills like communication, decision-making, and even entrepreneurship.”

However, the road to success was not without challenges. Calvin faced significant doubt, both from others and within himself. “There were peers who dismissed my ideas and colleagues who undervalued my contributions,” he recalls. “But those moments taught me resilience.” Calvin realized his greatest successes came in environments that valued his unique talents—a realization that inspired him to create such environments for others through Jubileague Academy.

Today, Jubileague Academy is thriving. The Playmaker program has partnered with local schools and youth tech hubs to expand its reach, with plans for scalable models to integrate the program into more educational institutions. Student ambassadors and collaborations with educators have been pivotal in driving growth.

A defining moment for Calvin came during an early workshop when students presented their games to friends and family. “One student, who didn’t want to be there on the first day, ended up being one of our top contributors by the last day,” Calvin shares. “Seeing his transformation reminded me why I started this.”

Calvin credits The Boost Pad as a key factor in his success. “The Boost Pad gave me the tools, mentorship, and community I needed to move forward. The weekly sessions provided timely instruction to refine my business plan, and the encouragement from my peers kept me motivated. My ability to pitch the Playmaker program and communicate its value has significantly improved because of this experience.”

Calvin’s vision is clear: to cover the world with “playmakers,” turning consumers into creators and showing the power of play as a tool for learning and innovation. Through Jubileague Academy, he’s proving that games aren’t just fun—they’re transformative.

Recently, our Cohort 9 entrepreneurs gathered for an insightful session led by David Worrell, founder of FUSE CFO, who broke down the essentials of financial literacy—a crucial skill for any founder looking to thrive long-term. David shared practical, hands-on guidance that gave our participants a clearer view of their businesses’ financial health and set them up to make confident, data-driven decisions. For many, this was a turning point, shedding light on what it really takes to build a resilient company.

David walked the group through three key financial statements every founder needs to understand to succeed:

Profit & Loss Statement: This statement helps founders answer the critical questions, “Am I making money?” and “Am I selling enough to cover my costs?” By comparing revenue and expenses, it shows whether a business is truly profitable and if prices or volume need adjusting to reach a sustainable income.

Balance Sheet: The balance sheet offers a snapshot of the business’s financial position, revealing assets and liabilities. David highlighted the importance of knowing exactly “Where is my money, and what do I owe?” This insight is crucial for planning growth or applying for funding, as it gives founders a strong sense of their financial standing.

Cash Flow Statement: Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. David’s session underscored the importance of knowing where cash is coming from and going each month, helping founders avoid unexpected shortfalls. For small businesses, managing cash flow is often the difference between stability and struggle, making this understanding especially empowering.

In addition, David introduced participants to the power of metrics and dashboards—tools that quickly show what’s working, what isn’t, and where immediate actions are needed. Tracking metrics like gross profit margin and variable expenses can transform a founder’s approach, helping them make agile, informed decisions that keep their business on track.

This knowledge is transformative, especially for BIPOC and minority entrepreneurs who often face barriers to funding and resources. Financial literacy gives these founders the confidence to manage growth, plan strategically, and demonstrate readiness when it’s time to seek funding. 2024 Boost Pad Cohort 8 Graduates & Pitch Night Event Award Winners

Last night was nothing short of magical as the Boost Pad community came together for the highly anticipated Cohort 8 Pitch Competition. The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement, anticipation, and an undeniable sense of camaraderie among the entrepreneurs.

As the sun set, the venue buzzed with energy. Founders, mentors, judges, and supporters gathered, exchanging ideas and inspirations. The evening began with a warm welcome from our host, who set the tone for what promised to be an unforgettable event.

Participants took to the stage one by one, each with a gleam of determination in their eyes. Their pitches were polished, their passion palpable. The audience was captivated by the innovative ideas presented, ranging from cutting-edge technology solutions to creative community projects.

Announcing the Nitro Fund

The Boost Pad is proud to announce the launch of the Nitro Fund – a new program to boost the success of underrepresented entrepreneurs.

Nationally, funding for minority and female founders remains at abysmal levels. Last year, only 2.6% of venture capital investments went to minorities, and 2.2% went to women.* The Nitro Fund is a venture philanthropy fund that aims to fill the gaps in traditional financing for underrepresented founders in the Charlotte area.

From day one, The Boost Pad understood that our ability to impact economic mobility in Charlotte depended on getting resources into the hands of underrepresented entrepreneurs. We were inspired by the venture philanthropy work done by The Rockefeller Foundation and went to work adapting their model to fit our program.

The Nitro Fund will provide grants, make equity investments, or provide loans to businesses that have demonstrated market traction and a path to profitability. Funding will be made available to graduates of the Boost Pad’s business training program.

The first grant was awarded to Eric DeWalt for his business Satchel .

Co-Executive Director Steven Lewis explained, “As we looked at the work done by the entrepreneurs in the first three cohorts, one person really stood out. Eric DeWalt participated in all the meetings, completed all the deliverables, and was focused on growing his business. We saw Eric take his idea and turn it into a business with help from The Boost Pad. Eric exemplifies an individual that benefited from the three Cs that the Boost Pad delivers. The ability to deliver startup currency to our entrepreneurs had always been aspirational, and due to the Nitro Fund, it is now a reality.”

The Nitro Fund was launched with a $45,000 sponsorship grant from TheStartup.com and will grow its assets through donations and investment returns from the businesses. Boost Pad donors will have the option to designate all or a portion of their tax-deductible donations to the Nitro Fund.

The Boost Pad believes that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. By continuing to find innovative ways to promote economic mobility, we are boosting a new generation of female and BIPOC entrepreneurs and encouraging the emergence of a more dynamic, more equitable Charlotte.

Eric DeWalt | Satchel Fantasy Football

After two and a half years of development, the Satchel app has launched in the app store, marking a milestone for entrepreneur Eric DeWalt .

Eric’s entrepreneurial journey started with his love of fantasy football and his identification of a gap in the market. He noticed the poor user experience, overly complex interface, and lacking social engagement side of other fantasy football programs. This led to the creation of Satchel, a fantasy football app designed with the user in mind.

Satchel has messaging and posting capabilities integrated into the program to create banter between users. “The goal is to create more interaction within the league than what you would normally have,” Eric said. “What most people fall in love with when it comes to fantasy football is their league, their community, the trash talking, the banter, and the camaraderie that comes from that.”

Creating an app that delivered the user experience Eric envisioned while still maintaining an intuitive interface was a big challenge. One of the most important things for Eric was that he just kept going. He said that there were points where he could’ve taken shortcuts, but what he was creating wouldn’t have fit his vision.

Eric also learned to manage the intersection of personal and business relationships. Over the course of the development process, he began to better understand the dynamics of running a business and interacting with people as a businessman.

Eric discovered that this was a common struggle for other entrepreneurs through The Boost Pad. He received encouragement from mentors and fellow entrepreneurs there – in addition to the business knowledge they equipped him with.

He hopes to someday be able to give back in a similar way.

“Being Black in the tech space is sort of uncommon, and we’re hoping that we can inspire others and at some point mentor others and help them reach their goals,” Eric said.

But for now, it’s time to celebrate this milestone.

Satchel is ready for the 2022 football season. Users can download the app and start their leagues.

“We’re right on the cusp, timing-wise, for a lot of people,” Eric said. “I have a few hundred people prepared to help us test and provide consistent feedback through this season. But with all that said, we are hitting right at the right spot.”

Between this year and next, Eric plans on traveling to different events to build brand awareness. He will also grow Satchel’s social media presence. He especially plans on using YouTube to his advantage by creating tutorials to help new players start their leagues and join in the fun.

Eric is already looking to the future. For next year, Satchel will grow its fantasy football subscriber base. In the future, Satchel will also include other sports such as baseball, and possibly even extend to foreign sports leagues.

To support that growth, Eric is looking for investors who share his vision and see the potential in the large and growing fantasy football market.

Rachel Zwipf | Clean Chicks & Lily Springs

Rachel Zwipf never dreamed of being an entrepreneur. Her journey started out of necessity.

Rachel moved to Charlotte, North Carolina nine years ago as a single mother. Her need for a steady income and her desire to spend time with her two sons led her to work in the cleaning industry, and she began posting listings for her services on various websites.

After six months, the business demand was too much to keep up with on her own, and Rachel’s entrepreneurial journey was about to take off. She hired her first employee and began to develop the Clean Chicks brand identity, but she didn’t stop there.

Rachel noticed that her hands were becoming extremely dry and cracked from the clearing products that she used. “It was not good for my body,” she said. “I started doing my research, and I looked into any Black-owned cleaning products that I could buy and support. I couldn’t find one, so I thought maybe it’s my time to create this, and Lily Springs was born.”

Lily Springs is Rachel’s line of natural cleaning products. Rachel created her new products through a process of research, experimentation, and client feedback. She thought through every aspect of the products – developing the labeling, creating the scent, and even considering the customer experience.

Rachel wants to delight her customers, so she includes freebies and inserts in every package. “If it brings me joy, I’m pretty sure it will bring somebody else joy,” she said.

The quick growth of Clean Chicks and Lily Springs meant that Rachel had to figure out a lot of things on the fly, but to continue to grow and build a sustainable business, she knew she needed support.

To learn more about entrepreneurship, Rachel first went through a program with the Women’s Business Center of Charlotte. Then, she applied for The Boost Pad where she has appreciated the training and the opportunity to bounce ideas off of other business owners.

Rachel believes that if she would have had The Boost Pad earlier in her career, she wouldn’t have had as many stressors or complications. She explained, “Lack of understanding leaves you unprepared.”

The training and encouragement have helped Rachel move her business forward. It has given her the confidence to push herself and pursue new opportunities. She said she often thinks, “I may not be comfortable, but let me go and do it.”

With a sound business structure in place and a network of support to grow her business, Rachel is furthering their reach by partnering with janitorial companies for distribution, and by entering the government contracting space. She is also expanding her offerings to include white glove service for Airbnb locations.

Rachel is also passing down the lessons she has learned to others. Her 10-year-old son, Jackson, works alongside her in Lily Springs. Their partnership reflects the abundance mindset she brings to her entrepreneurial journey. ”I think more entrepreneurs really need to give back to other entrepreneurs, to be a support. I believe that there is so much money and abundance out there that you don’t need to stifle resources or clients. Let’s truly help each other out.”

Educating Entrepreneurs on Mental Health

The Boost Pad exists to provide underrepresented entrepreneurs with the resources they need to build successful businesses. Of course, that means business training and professional mentorship, but you might not have considered the importance of mental health training for entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs are typically self-driven individuals used to working in high-pressure, high-stakes situations. On the outside, it can look like everything is okay – even when they are really struggling on the inside. We decided it was important to equip our cohort members with the knowledge and tools they need to maintain their mental health.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

An Expert Who Understands Our Community

The Boost Pad partnered with Tameka Brewington of Real Talk Counseling to deliver Mental Health 101 sessions as part of our curriculum.

Tameka is a licensed therapist who has been working in mental health and substance abuse counseling for 26 years. Additionally, she has teaching experience through her position as a community college instructor.

Helping entrepreneurs maintain their mental health.

Tameka explained, “Everybody has the capacity to have a mental health diagnosis.”

With that understanding, she teaches The Boost Pad cohorts what she calls Mental Health 101. She equips them with knowledge and practical actions they can take to protect their mental health.

That training includes everything from guidance on finding a therapist to what to expect during an appointment to understanding how to pay for mental health services.

For Mental Health Month, Tameka shared four practical mental health tips for entrepreneurs .

1. Take care of yourself

When you’re not regulated, you can’t operate at 100% when it comes to your business. Pay attention to the things that help you regulate:

Do you have people who are encouraging you, or do you have people doubting you? Be intentional about who you allow speaking into your life.

3. Stay grounded in reality

Entrepreneurs are visionaries, but vision can turn into a fantasy of instant success and wealth. Be real. There are going to be challenges. Stay grounded in your skills and abilities and stay the course.

4. Ask for help when you need it

If you feel like you need to talk to somebody, reach out. Don’t wait until you are in a full crisis. If you wait, it can put you in jeopardy of losing everything. And remember, if you start therapy, it doesn’t mean it’s forever. You may just need to talk to someone for a couple of months to recalibrate.

Tameka knows how to talk to entrepreneurs because she is one. In 2019, she decided to open a private practice with a focus on urban working professionals. She helps her clients manage a range of conditions, but high-functioning anxiety and depression are common struggles for professionals.

Her goal is to empower individuals to live meaningful lives. She explains, “Just because you’ve gone to school and have a job and you’re ‘successful’ does not mean that you are living the American dream, that you’re happy, or that you’re not dealing with something.”

Tameka understands her target market and structured her practice around their specific needs. Scheduling an appointment during working hours can be a struggle for professionals. Real Talk therapists are available seven days a week and during non-traditional hours so they are there when their clients are not working. They also utilize other tools to make connecting easier, like telehealth.

Underrepresented populations deserve help to overcome barriers to mental health support. Tameka explained, “There aren’t a lot of minorities that are in the clinical counseling field. And so a lot of people are hesitant to reach out and talk.”

Real Talk Counseling is intentional about creating a safe space for a diverse range of urban professionals.

“From a cultural perspective, minority populations – especially African Americans because I can only speak from my perspective – are not taught to talk about their problems or to talk about what’s going on inside their household. And so a lot of people are holding things in and they’ve internalized it … they’ve been dealing with mental health and they don’t even know they’re traumatized. They think it’s just part of living their experience. So, it is very important for minorities to have representation.”

William Ward Owner of PettyGigs

William Ward came to the US as a teenage refugee fleeing war and poverty in Liberia. He came with his family, but because of their circumstances, he knew he needed to fend for himself. Unfortunately, finding his first job was challenging, and it remained a challenge to find flexible employment as he continued his education.

PettyGigs was born out of that experience. William saw an opportunity in the community for both workers who need flexibility and individuals who need short-term help.

PettyGigs connects vetted teens and young adults with busy professionals and businesses that need help with short-term services, tasks, and errands.

Their platform makes the process simple.

A business or individual in need of help posts a gig with an hourly rate offer.
The workers get notified of the posting and can accept the job.
The worker shows up, performs the job, and gets paid.

Built-in protocols make the process safe. All transactions are handled inside the app without physical money exchange, and all workers are screened and background checked.

The ultimate goal is not only to connect workers and busy people but also to put teens and young adults on a path to financial health. More than 40% of the US population doesn’t have access to investing and savings. PettyGigs focuses on under-resourced communities where that problem is even more acute – where there aren’t a lot of opportunities to earn supplemental income to save.

PettyGigs has built-in financial solutions that allow workers to save and invest their money. William explained, “Our vision is really to power communities. To get folks on a healthy financial path, get folks on a path to financial freedom while easing the burdens of busy professionals, seniors, and local businesses that need help.”

After opening in 2019 and surviving COVID-19 lockdowns, PettyGigs is getting traction. They have experienced over 700 percent increase in signups since piloting in Charlotte, and individual transactions have been 5x higher than anticipated. Interest in B2B services is growing as companies look for affordable, flexible solutions in a tight labor market.

Interest is also growing outside of the Charlotte metro area, and that is right in line with William’s vision to grow the business nationally and even globally.

Grant funding from NC IDEA will be used for additional customer discovery and marketing. The best channels to connect with users have been identified, so the money will help PettyGigs dip into those channels further and see which ones are the best performing. Marketing will focus on customer awareness.

William sees a bright future for PettyGigs. “A bridge to make this thing happen is exciting. It excites me to know that millions of people like myself will be benefiting from PettyGigs in time to come.”

Malobi Achike Owner of DEI Directive

In 2020, Malobi Achike was in a demanding corporate position that required a lot of travel. She was ready for a change, but she was unsure of what her next step should be.

When the pandemic hit, travel stopped and work-from-home started. Balancing two children and remote work expedited her decision – Malobi put in her two weeks’ notice.

And then, the news about George Floyd broke. “I was in this two-week window, so my schedule wasn’t as heavily booked as it normally would be. I was actually really able to be present and absorb the news.”

The Tuesday following Floyd’s murder was Blackout Tuesday – a viral effort to pause business and publicly stand up to racism and inequality, with many businesses posting a black tile to their social media feeds.

“The Tuesday after was really the day that was very pivotal for me,” Malobi explained that it was good to see the support, but she knew the Blackout Tuesday effort would not result in any real impact.

She wondered, “What happens when we lift that veil? If I look at your organization, what are the dynamics? What are the conditions? What are the policies? What are the practices? Are those practices fair to the same group that you are publicly supporting through this black tile?”

That was the impetus for starting DEI Directive.

DEI Directive is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion technology firm. This B2B SaaS application is designed to help people who have been mandated with improving the DEI health of their organizations to make data-informed decisions that result in real impact.

Most organizations look at gender, race, and ethnic breakdown, but there is so much other rich information that can help leaders understand the DEI culture of their organization. DEI Directive helps diversity officers collect, standardize, and connect all of that information on their platform.

“[Diversity officers] are typically given this huge mandate and they typically don’t have a tool – technology or data insights – to be able to manage that process. In fact, only about 35% of organizations track DEI data, and most of the people who are doing it are doing it manually.”

Malobi likened the process to go to the doctor. Only when the problem is properly diagnosed can you start treating it.

When DEI data is accessible it makes it possible to holistically assess the status quo at the organization and to specifically diagnose what the issues are. Equipped with an understanding of what’s happening internally, companies can devise a targeted strategy that has a chance of working in the long run.

The NC IDEA grant funding awarded to DEI Directive will be used for software expansion and development that will enable the company to grow and have a greater impact.
